2023 May Futures Club Newsletter & Notes

It's official, we're out of the drought!! The recent rain has been great for the vineyard. Past years of dealing with the drought have presented challenges such as a lower yield on some of our varieties. The different strategy for 2023 will be dealing with the extra vigor caused by the heavy rains. In fact, thinning the crop for quality control is top priority for our vineyard crew right now and over the next few weeks.

Want to taste the previous vintage? We are taking tasting reservations by appointment. Just ask for some barrel tasting samples when you make your appointment, and in most instances, we would be happy to accommodate your request. 2023 Pre-Harvest Futures Now Being Offered

More About the 3 New Futures Wines Being Offered for 2023

DC Fusion (10 month aging)

Since a few of our members have been asking, we are answering with a lower alcohol wine for 2023 - a new version of DC Fusion. This one is going to come in at around 13% alcohol and will consist of approximately 40% Souzao, 35% Alvarelhao and 25% Tannat. It will be dry and lighter in intensity than our other red wines but made in the same "David Coffaro style” of fresh fruit forward. The lower price of $13.60 a bottle to our club members makes it all the more appealing. Give it a try!

Nebbiolo (16 month aging)

Since the Nebbiolo vines originally established in our vineyard in 2013 have been supplemented with newer plantings, we'll have enough Nebbiolo to make a varietal this year. Because you know we love blending, our 2020 Nebbiolo will include approximately 25% Sangiovese. This is our take on the well-known Barolo, a premier wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy - think of it as the Coffaro version of a Super Tuscan- Barolo hybrid. Molto bene!

Luminaire (Sauvignon Blanc based white wine blend)

For this vintage, we're going to produce our very popular white wine blend again, but with a little twist. You'll get to choose between two options - one aged exclusively in stainless steel and the other aged in 100% new French oak. Over the past few years, Dave has been experimenting with aging the Luminaire in new French oak barrels for 5-6 months, and thinks that he has the answer to a creamy Chardonnay. But for those of you who prefer the traditional stainless steel-aged Sauvignon Blanc blends, that option is still available. After placing an order, contact pat@coffaro.com to make your choice.

Awards

We are happy to announce, after a VERY LONG hiatus- we entered some of our wines into competition. We’re happier still, to report that every wine we entered won a medal! The wines we showcased at the 2022 Sonoma County Harvest Fair were as follows:

2021 Luminaire - Bronze
2020 Block 6 Zin – Silver
2020 Petite Sirah – Silver
2020 Carignan – Silver
2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Gold
2020 Block 4 – DOUBLE GOLD

Did you receive your 2021 Futures?

Due to a manufacturing defect, a small percentage of capsules on the 16-month wines will come off in one piece. This will not affect the integrity of the wine. Just twist the capsule back on the bottle if you do not finish the wine the first day after opening. Our apologies. Finally, as a thank you for taking the time to read through this entire newsletter, we're offering you a chance to win a sampler 3pk of the new 2023 wines - DC Fusion, Nebbiolo, and Luminaire! Just send your entry for the drawing to pat@coffaro.com by June 30, 2023. The winner will be notified by July 10th and your 3pk sent after bottling the Nebbiolo in January of 2025.
