David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Week 43
October 20, 2002 to October 26, 2002

  Wednesday October 23, 2002

Except for maybe some more Late Harvest Sauv Blanc, harvest is over. Brendan and I pressed out last red wine yesterday, our Syrah from Bennett Valley. I now will have fun with the computer while I decide how many gallons of each wine we have. This will all be done on an Excel spreadsheet file called "2002 barrel first". By next week I will know what the composition of 2002 ZP2C will be. Of course that will be equal amounts of every barrel we produce. It will also be fun to find out what our alcohols are and then decide which barrel will go into each of our wines.

This last weekend and last night, it has been a real tough time for our Bay Area sports teams. Most of you know that I am a big Oakland Raider fan and I do follow the 49ers and Giants also. But, some of you may not know that these teams play in three different stadiums that are about eight miles apart as the crow flies. San Francisco City is only 8 miles across, with Candlestick Park, home of the 49ers, at one end and Pac Bell, home of the Giants, at the other. And Oakland is only about 8 miles across the Bay from these two parks. If you draw a triangle, with the point at the right, Pac Bell would be at the top, Candlestick at the bottom and The Oakland Coliseum, home of the Raiders at the right. In a way this makes us closer than most sports areas in the country.

I've changed some of what I wrote about our three Bay Area teams last Wednesday. Even my Daughter, Kate, did not understand what I wanted to say. It was a triangle.

Every year winemaking is a challenge for me. That is why I love it so much. This year, I am going to go into more detail about how I am going to blend over 200 barrels into 12 wines. I've started to do some alcohol samples of a few barrels and I am amazed at the variance. I have an old vine zin at 13.2 alc and one at 14.6. I have a malbec/cab franc barrel with a little zin in it at 12.7 alc (what am I going to do with it?). I have one petite sirah at 13.3 and another at 14.4. Over the next several weeks, for those of you interested, I plan on revealing all alcohols and how I decide to mix them.
