David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Weeks 23 - 26
June 8, 2008 - July 5, 2008

Tuesday June 10, 2008

We just did inventory of all our wines and found out that we only have 16 cases of our 2007 Sauv Blanc left. This is the wine that both Pat and I like a lot so I need to keep her supplied. So I have just taken it off the order sheet.

The grape bunches are filling out and I will have another estimate of our crop next week. If you go to the 2008 order form you will see my latest estimate for the 2008 cases.

Thursday June 19, 2008

We are gearing up to start bottling our 2007 wines. On July 7th we will start with the 2007 My Zin and then follow the next day with the Escuro and our first 100% Estate Petite Sirah. We should be able to finish on Monday the 14th with our 2007 Block 4. In all we will bottle about 4700 cases. It will be a busy time.

Every time I walk out in the vineyard the crop looks better. At this time I am not going to raise my estimate of 2900 cases for our 2008 vintage. I will obviously have more input later.

On a very sad note and some good news!! This has been a very active time for us in the last several days. We traveled down to San Luis Obispo to watch Kate accept her diploma as a structural Engineer. On Friday the 13th after hearing of Tim Russert's death I commented "Only the good one's die young". Sure I could have said some of the good one's die young. On Saturday. Sunday and Monday I had a great time watching the US Open and then on Sunday and Tuesday it was fun to watch the NBA finals. On Tuesday after our return the painters came. We are in the process of painting all our buildings on our property. What a mess it has created!! Then on Tuesday morning the sad thing started.

My favorite cat, Fluff Ball, is missing. I have not seen her since Monday night. She is always around!! I don't expect to see her again. She was my Father's Day gift from Susie last year. As most of you know after reading my diary we have lost many cats over the years. They always seem to be my favorite ones. Only the good one's die young.

Wednesday June 25, 2008

We have another cat missing so we don't know what is happening. We assume a coyote got both of them but since we have found no remains we will probably never know. Our brown siamese, Leroy, is the latest to disappear. He is the cat who was bitten by a rattle snake and survived. Check out my diary entry on May 26. 2004. I want no more cats. This is hard to take.

Today we moved and restacked all the wine cases to prepare for bottling. Since we now have to store the 2007 case goods I've decided to put many of our 2005 wines on sale because I am running out of room. Next week I will have more on this subject and our open house on August 23rd.

Tuesday July 1, 2008

Pat and I just got back from visiting Susie up in Seattle. I flew by plane for the first time in almost 9 years. It was nice to travel 850 miles in two hours. I could get used to this.

We are finalizing many things today. I will have  information on our open house and 2005 wine sale tomorrow. We may even send off the email announcing these two things. Tomorrow we bottle a small run of custom crush for the Wine Guerrilla and Monday we start bottling our 2007 wines.

Thursday July 3, 2008

Here is the schedule for the bottling of our 2007 wines next week:

My Zin 635 Cases July 7th

Escuro 490 Cases July 8th
Petite Sirah 315 Cases July 8th

Aca Modot 515 Cases July 9th
Carignan 245 Cases July 9th

Zinfandel 585 Cases July 10th
Cabernet 195 Cases July 10th

Terre Melange 365 Cases July 11th
Estate Cuvee 465 Cases July 11th

Barbera 111 Cases July 14th
Block 4 765 Cases July 14th

We are still working on our new order form and email. We hope to have both out by tomorrow.

5:00Pm: As some of you might have seen, we sent out our new email. I have convinced Brad to send it in HTML so Pat and I think it looks a lot nicer. If anyone is having trouble receiving it please let us know. Take a look at the new offer for the 2005 wines. I will definitely use what we don't sell now to top off some of our 2008 wines.

I have good news about the 2008 Barbera. Catarino and I took a look at the vines that were hit with frost on April 20th. There is a great deal of small second crop grape bunches that are forming so I have put the 2008 Barbera for sale on our order form again. All the bunches on our other varietals are swelling up nicely so I should have a better estimate for our potential crop in the next few weeks.
